What to Expect at Your First BOTOX® Cosmetic Appointment

Woman at her first BOTOX® Cosmetic appointment

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections at our Torrance practice are highly popular treatments for smoothing wrinkles and creating or maintaining a more youthful, rested appearance. While it’s likely you’ve heard about the benefits of this injectable treatment, you may be uncertain about what to expect when you visit us for your first BOTOX procedure.

This blog post will walk you through your first BOTOX treatment, from your initial consultation to your final results.

Why BOTOX?

BOTOX is a nonsurgical approach for smoothing lines and wrinkles such as horizontal forehead lines, vertical lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Along with similar products Dysport® and Jeuveau™, it’s made of botulinum toxin A, which relaxes specific muscles that repeatedly contract to form lines over time. Expertly placed injections allow you to remain expressive while helping your skin look smoother.

Consultation

When you arrive at our practice, you’ll meet with a qualified member of the medical team, who performs a full assessment of your face and discusses your goals with you. You may be asked to make different facial expressions so your injector can identify areas where wrinkling is occurring. Our skilled injectors use this information to create personalized treatment plans based on each patient’s facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Depending on the look you’re hoping to achieve, your injector may recommend additional treatments, such as injectable dermal fillers.

Treatment

After cleansing your skin, your injector will use a fine needle to inject the product into the locations you discussed, which only takes a few minutes. You may feel a small pinch similar to a bug bite, though our patients typically say this is tolerated with minimal discomfort.

Recovery

While there is no downtime, you may experience some swelling or bruising around the injection sites for a few days. It’s best to postpone exercise, stay out of the sun, and avoid rubbing or putting pressure on the injection sites for the first 24 hours. You will lower your chances of bruising if you stop taking NSAIDs (aspirin and ibuprofen) a week before and don’t drink alcohol 24 hours before your appointment.

Results

Your results will develop during the first 7 to 10 days after the injections and typically last for 3 to 4 months. You may notice fewer fine lines and a smoother appearance in the treated areas. To see examples of what you can expect, please visit our before-and-after photo gallery.
