The “Bo-Curious” Generation—Why Millennials Are Into BOTOX®

It’s not surprising that many members of the Millennial generation are becoming “Bo-curious.” A recent survey on RealSelf revealed that 51% of people between the ages of 18 to 34 are considering a cosmetic treatment in the next year. As BOTOX Cosmetic has remained one of the most popular treatments at our Torrance practice and throughout the U.S., it makes total sense that the treatment is growing in popularity among younger men and women.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at why Millennials are falling in love with BOTOX—and how they’re using it to make their youthful looks last.

Are Millennials the Right Age to Start BOTOX Treatments?

Despite being a younger demographic, Millennials are actually at a perfect point to try out injectables for the first time. As a generation, they are entering their late 20s and 30s, which is the prime time for the formation of dynamic wrinkles. Though many people see BOTOX as an anti-aging treatment, preventative BOTOX is just as effective for slowing the formation of wrinkles and preserving smooth, youthful skin. The same goes for BOTOX’s sister products Dysport® and Jeuveau®, which work in the same way.

BOTOX works by relaxing facial muscles that form wrinkles through their repeated movements. Common expressions that are known to cause these wrinkles include squinting, frowning, or raising the eyebrows—all of which happen frequently in daily life. By utilizing BOTOX earlier, before these muscles have time to create deep lines, you can help prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place. This is the main philosophy behind BOTOX use by Millennials.

How Has Social Media Influenced BOTOX Use?

With many celebrities—often younger celebs—frequently using injectables, social media has become like a live photo gallery for cosmetic treatments. It’s easier than ever to become familiar with injectable treatments, their effects, and what it’s really like to undergo them. In fact, it’s not difficult to find photos and videos of stars getting injected. The conversation is much more transparent than the previously more hushed discussions about getting cosmetic work done.

Millennials are also aware of the importance of keeping an attractive public image, be it in an Instagram post or a LinkedIn profile picture. They want to look their best, and they’re aware of the ways cosmetic enhancements can help.

Popular BOTOX treatments for younger people include:

  • Frown lines or “11s” between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines caused by raising the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet along the outer corners of the eyes
  • Gummy smile treatment
  • Jawline slimming with masseter reduction
  • Nonsurgical brow lifts

Young people use these treatments to subtly perfect the way they look and keep signs of aging at bay without looking “overdone.” When performed by a trained injector, BOTOX treatments should not drastically change your appearance, but elevate it and bring out the very best in your look.

Why Are Millennials More Open About Cosmetic Treatments?

As cosmetic treatments become more and more common, many Millennials no longer feel the pressure to hide their treatments. With the recent trends towards embracing self-love and self-care, more people are feeling open and excited about using cosmetic procedures to obtain the look they’ve always wanted. Gone are the days of sneaking in and out of the plastic surgeon’s office. Today, it’s not uncommon for celebrities and influencers to share selfies straight from the chair.

It’s not about a dramatic transformation, however. Millennial treatments fall more along the line of “tweakments,” or more subtle procedures aimed at correcting minor concerns on an ongoing basis. Much like going to the salon or getting your nails done, BOTOX has become part of today’s personal self-care routine. Because BOTOX lasts about 3 to 4 months, it’s normal to see young people stopping in for touch-up treatments several times throughout the year.

How Much Are Millennials Spending on BOTOX?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 1.4 million BOTOX treatments were performed on people in their 30s in 2019 alone. Most BOTOX treatments costing between $12 and $15 per unit, but treatments range in units from about 5 to about 30 per treatment area, so it’s difficult to estimate just how much Millennials are spending in total. As the numbers continue to rise year over year, it’s clear this demographic sees BOTOX treatments as a worthy investment in their self-confidence and self-image.

At The SPA at South Bay Plastic Surgeons, we offer a V.I.P. membership program aimed at making these treatments as affordable as possible, complete with BOTOX discounts. Our Los Angeles-area practice also accepts payments through financing options such as CareCredit®, which can help make treatments more affordable for Millennials or anyone with an eye on their BOTOX budget.
