Our Favorite Treatments for Acne Scars

Woman hiding acne scars.

As if acne wasn’t frustrating enough on its own, it often leaves behind unsightly scars that seem to resist at-home treatments. From laser resurfacing to facial fillers, Manhattan Beach-area men and women have multiple effective options to choose from when it comes to treating acne scars at our Torrance practice.

In this post, we’ll review the various types of acne scars many people struggle with and the treatments we recommend for making them disappear.

Cause & Types of Acne Scars

Acne penetrates the skin deeply and damages tissues underneath, which starts a natural healing process. Variation in collagen production during this process is what leads to scarring. The results of this may include:

  • Depressed scars: Most common on the face, these occur when not enough collagen is made during healing.
  • Raised scars: Most common on chest and back, these are the result of too much collagen made during healing.

Acne Scar Treatments

When it comes to treating acne scars, one or more of these med spa treatments may help.

Dermal Fillers

This treatment is most effective for people struggling with a small number of depressed scars. A dermal filler, typically a hyaluronic acid-based product such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® is injected into the depression to fill it up and create a more even skin surface. Crystal-Free Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion resurfaces the skin by removing the dead outer layer of cells. This creates a softer, smoother surface. For shallow depressed scars, we recommend a crystal-free microdermabrasion technique, which uses natural diamond chips and powerful suction for a more aggressive treatment.

The Perfect Peel®

Best for deeper depressed scars, the Perfect Peel contains a powerful blend of ingredients that work to remove the damaged outer layer of skin, reducing or eliminating acne scars and dark spots. It also stimulates the production of collagen for stronger, healthier skin. This peel involves no skin preparation and minimal, if any, discomfort and downtime.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Effective for all variations of acne scars, laser skin resurfacing heats and resurfaces the skin, so it’s smoother and brighter. Our CO2 resurfacing approach works on a deep level to erase imperfections and create a radiant look. This is not an ideal option for patients with active acne.

Microneedling

This popular treatment improves the overall health of the skin and may reduce the depth of depressed acne scars. Microneedling stimulates collagen production causing the skin to look younger with improved texture and tone.
