Any surgical procedure that involves incisions will result in some scarring. The reassuring news is that at South Bay Plastic Surgeons, scars are carefully planned, thoughtfully placed, and designed to fade beautifully over time.

A mommy makeover isn’t one procedure, but a personalized combination—most commonly a tummy tuck, cosmetic breast surgery, and liposuction. Each component has its own incision pattern, and understanding where scars are typically located can help set realistic, confident expectations.

Where Are Mommy Makeover Scars Usually Located?

Our surgeons customize every mommy makeover procedure, meaning that your tummy tuck or breast lift incisions may be more or less extensive than those of another patient. Regardless of the location, however, our surgeons promote optimal incision healing with multiple-layer suture closures.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck scar is typically a horizontal line placed low on the abdomen, just above the pubic area. Our surgeons strategically position this incision so it can be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear. If the belly button is repositioned, there may also be a small, well-hidden scar around the navel.

Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation

Breast-related scars depend on the technique used:

  • A breast lift may involve incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and sometimes along the fold beneath the breast.
  • Breast augmentation scars are often placed in the breast crease, around the areola, or discreetly in the underarm.

If you want fuller, elevated breasts, combining a lift with breast implants is an option. The goal is always to balance and achieve a refined breast shape while keeping scars as subtle as possible.

Liposuction

Liposuction requires only very small incisions, typically just a few millimeters long. These are placed in natural creases or less noticeable areas and usually fade to near invisibility over time.

How Scars Heal and Fade Over Time

Scar healing is a gradual process. Initially, scars may appear pink or slightly raised. Over the next several months, they typically soften, flatten, and fade to a lighter tone that blends more naturally with your skin.

Most patients see significant improvement within 6 to 12 months, with continued refinement beyond that. Our surgeons carefully plan incision placement and use advanced closure techniques to support optimal healing from the very start. What Affects the Appearance of Your Scars?

Several factors influence scar appearance, including:

  • Skin type and genetics: Some people naturally heal with finer scars than others.
  • Surgical technique: Meticulous incision planning and gentle tissue handling matter.
  • Aftercare: How well you follow post-op instructions plays a major role.
  • Sun exposure: UV exposure can darken scars if not properly protected.

Because every patient is unique, your surgeon will discuss what to expect based on your individual skin and procedure plan.

Start With a Consultation

Yes, a mommy makeover leaves scars, but they are intentionally placed, carefully managed, and designed to fade with time. For most patients, the confidence gained from restored contours far outweighs the visibility of scars.
