A board-certified plastic surgeon in Torrance, Dr. Michael K. Newman offers the full spectrum of cosmetic surgery, including both plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breasts, and body. He is an active member of The Aesthetic Society, Chair of Plastic Surgery at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, and Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA. Dr. Newman’s outstanding surgical skills and caring bedside manner have made him a favorite among Los Angeles plastic surgery patients. He is known for his positive attitude, thorough consultations, and excellent results, and patients often comment that Dr. Newman’s friendly demeanor made it easy for them to express themselves and get their questions answered.
This commitment to exceptional patient care has been repeatedly recognized throughout Dr. Newman’s 20+ year career. He has been honored with the Compassionate Doctor Award and the Patient’s Choice Award, both based on patient ratings and votes to recognize the top physicians in the US.
In addition, Dr. Newman has been included in Los Angeles Magazine’s Best of LA Super Doctors list annually, which identifies healthcare providers with outstanding professional achievement.
Active in His Field
Dr. Newman is part of the teaching faculty at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Division of Plastic Surgery. As an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA, he is actively involved in the education and training of UCLA plastic surgery residents.
He has presented research at the state, national, and international levels and contributes to the advancement of his field through clinical research trials and through his involvement in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Newman obtained his undergraduate degree from UCLA and then moved to the East Coast for medical training, including medical school at the highly regarded University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and basic science research at the National Institutes of Health. He then spent six years at the Medical College of Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center), completing a combined general surgery and plastic surgery residency.
During his residency training, Dr. Newman gained extensive experience across all areas of plastic surgery, including cosmetic surgery of the face and body, surgery after massive weight loss, reconstruction of the head and body after traumatic injuries, reconstruction of the head and body after major cancer surgery, repair of facial and hand fractures, elective and traumatic hand surgery, craniofacial surgery including cleft lip and palate repair, burn surgery, and wound care.
Breast and Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship
Upon completion of his plastic surgery residency, Dr. Newman was selected to pursue additional fellowship training at Georgetown University Hospital under the prestigious guidance of Drs. Scott Spear and Maurice Nahabedian, two internationally recognized plastic surgeons specializing in breast surgery. Their combined expertise, particularly regarding breast implants and DIEP flaps, led them to author the seminal textbook for all types of breast surgery.
The fellowship at Georgetown also focused on cosmetic surgery of the face and body, including clinical instructor responsibilities such as teaching cosmetic surgery techniques to residents.
During his training, Dr. Newman was involved in numerous research endeavors. He has published several papers, particularly on the topics of breast cosmetics and breast reconstruction (see CV for details).

Outside of training plastic surgery residents, Dr. Newman seeks to educate his patients and the greater public. He is a regular column contributor for New You magazine and is frequently profiled by national and international publications to bring awareness to his field.
Dr. Newman has featured on the cover of British Thoughts Magazine, Gurus Magazine, and LAPALME Magazine and has made television appearances on ABC Nightline News and local programs in California, Arizona, Tennessee, and Florida.
He joined South Bay Plastic Surgeons in 2007, where he continues to offer personalized patient care and natural-looking results across the full spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures.
