Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, at our Torrance, California, plastic surgery practice refines the size and shape of the nose for improved facial harmony. We specialize in natural-looking results that enhance your nose while preserving its character and uniqueness.
Rhinoplasty is the surgical revision of the nose for cosmetic and/or functional reasons. Our plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty to sculpt a shapelier and more proportionate nose and to alleviate breathing problems.
The cost of rhinoplasty depends on the extent of your procedure and the specific techniques employed. While we offer general estimates on our Pricing page, we cannot provide an accurate quote until you meet with one of our plastic surgeons to discuss your unique goals and concerns.
If you were born with a deviated septum or developed breathing issues due to nasal trauma, your insurance may cover all or part of your procedure expenses. However, insurance will not cover surgery purely for cosmetic reasons.
Many of our rhinoplasty patients from Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach, and throughout Los Angeles take advantage of financing options to manage the cost of their procedure.
Rhinoplasty is a delicate, technically demanding procedure that can significantly impact your appearance and your breathing.
South Bay Plastic Surgeons offers an elevated, thoughtful patient experience that plans for your needs and makes your rhinoplasty and recovery as smooth and comfortable as possible.
Our expert team of board-certified plastic surgeons has extensive training and experience in all facets of plastic and reconstructive surgery, making us a natural choice for both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty cases.
Rhinoplasty patients should be in good health, non-smokers, and their noses should be finished growing (usually around age 14 for girls and age 16 for boys).
Patients are typically interested in adjusting the size or contours of their noses in one of the following ways:
Functional rhinoplasty patients can also benefit from cosmetic alterations, but their primary reason for pursuing surgery is to correct breathing abnormalities.
Our rhinoplasty specialists use multiple techniques to sculpt your ideal nose, including cartilage revision, bone revision, and cartilage transfer. Your nose surgery will fall under one of two main categories:
This approach involves the surgeon making an incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), which allows the skin to be lifted and the nasal anatomy to be fully exposed. Our plastic surgeons use this approach for more complex cases or significant alterations, as it enables them to make precise adjustments to the bone and cartilage.
Open rhinoplasty typically results in a small, barely visible scar and leads to more predictable and refined outcomes.
Closed rhinoplasty is a less invasive surgical approach. It avoids external scars by making incisions within the nostrils, minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues. The closed rhinoplasty technique is ideal for patients seeking more subtle changes to their nasal shape and structure.
Although the refinements are less extensive than in open rhinoplasty, this conservative approach comes with a shorter recovery time.
Our board-certified plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty on an outpatient basis, meaning that you can go home the day of your surgery following a brief recovery period. You will be placed under anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the operation.
Your surgeon will prepare you for what to expect and walk you through the specific surgical plan for your operation. They may employ one or more different techniques to achieve your ideal result.
Rhinoplasty recovery involves several stages, with the initial healing typically taking about 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients feel well enough to return to non-strenuous work or school at this point, though they will need to take extreme care to protect their noses for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
We will prescribe you pain medication to keep you comfortable and will give you detailed instructions for your recovery. Bruising, swelling, and even black eyes may be common after rhinoplasty but will fade with time.
Your initial results will be apparent shortly after surgery, but it can take up to a year to fully appreciate the outcome of your procedure as the nose continues to settle into its new shape.
Some patients take advantage of a single recovery period by adding other procedures to their surgical plan. Depending on your aesthetic goals, you may be interested in other facial refinement surgeries, such as blepharoplasty, a brow lift, or a facelift.
Fat transfer and submental liposuction are also popular options for enhancing your facial proportions.
Revision rhinoplasty is a secondary procedure performed to correct or improve the results of an earlier rhinoplasty. Patients considering revision rhinoplasty should wait at least one year after their original rhinoplasty to allow for full healing and to assess the final results.
Your nose may initially appear swollen, and the final shape will not be immediately apparent. As time passes, factors such as aging, sun exposure, and skin thickness can subtly affect the appearance of your nose. Remember that it can take a year or more for the tissue to fully heal and settle.
Nonsurgical rhinoplasty, often called a “liquid nose job,” involves temporarily altering the shape of the nose using dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®. This option is suitable for minor cosmetic adjustments and can help patients “preview” what surgical rhinoplasty can achieve. Liquid rhinoplasty cannot address functional issues or provide significant structural changes.
Patients should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and contact or ball sports for at least 4 to 6 weeks after rhinoplasty. Light activities such as walking can usually be resumed within a few days, but anything that increases blood pressure should be avoided to prevent bleeding and swelling.
You may experience numbness, tightness, or changes in sensation around the nose and upper lip during your recovery. These side effects are usually temporary and should gradually improve over several months as the nerves heal.
