Before   After Breast Reconstruction

This patient is a 30 year old woman who developed breast cancer in her left breast at the age of 28. She was initially treated with lumpectomy and radiation on her left side. After this surgery, she remained concerned about the possibility of cancer recurrence either in the same breast or in the opposite breast. This prompted her to seek a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy procedure.  She consulted with our plastic surgeons regarding breast reconstruction (link) options. In order to give her the best possible cosmetic appearance, our plastic surgeons recommended a nipple sparing mastectomy procedure and reconstruction with expanders followed by implants.

During her surgery, the general surgeon performed bilateral mastectomies. Both nipples were preserved. Expanders were placed at that time and filled most of the way. Additional expansion was performed in the office a total of three times. The patient returned to surgery to have her expanders removed and replaced with implants. This resulted in soft breasts that looked and felt natural. The left breast remained darker than the right due to her history of radiation.
