Cosmetic Q & A: BREAST AUGMENTATION
Q: I want to be more proportional which is why I am looking into breast augmentation surgery, but I don't want anyone to know. Should I go with smaller implants?
A: Smaller implants definitely look more natural that bigger implants. Implant selection is a complex choice that should involve both the patient and the surgeon. Implants come in low-projection, mid-projection, and high-projection versions so the implant choice can be tailored to your suit your body and your desired result. Low-projection and mid-projection implants are excellent choices for people that want to look more proportional with a natural breast shape without bringing attention to their breasts. In contrast, high-projection implants provide more fullness in the upper part of the chest that gives a more dramatic look. You and your surgeon can select an implant shape and size based on your goals and preferences to achieve the look you desire.
Q: What's better, Saline or Silicone?
A: Both saline and silicone implants are reasonable. Silicone implants feel more natural, look more natural, and are more expensive. Silicone implants are also softer and less likely to wrinkle. Both saline and silicone implants are made of a solid silicone shell. The difference is that saline implants are filled with salt water while silicone implants are filled with a gel form of silicone. The gel form of silicone is one of the most studied medical products in the world and it has been proven to be very safe. Ultimately, the decision between a saline or silicone implant is up to the patient. Your surgeon would be happy to go over the differences in implants and even show you the different implants during your consultation.
Q: Can I get breast implants if I am planning on breast feeding in the future?
A: Absolutely. Most patients with breast implants are able to breast feed without difficulty and without any additional risks to the child. It is important to note that any type of breast surgery including breast implants may affect the ability of an individual to breast feed. Typically this means that you may produce less milk than you would have without breast surgery, but you should still be able to breast feed to some extent. You may have to supplement your child with additional milk purchased from a store.
Q: I tend to get sick from anesthesia, do I have to go completely "under" or can you perform breast augmentation under local anesthesia?
A: There are many different forms of anesthesia available so your anesthesia can be customized to your needs. Breast augmentation can be performed without going completely "under". However, you will need to have an IV placed to give you medicine to make you sleepy during the surgery. Also, there are medicines that can be used to minimize your chance of nausea after surgery, especially if you warn your doctor ahead of time about your tendency to get sick from anesthesia. It is important to note that the safest form of anesthesia is delivered by a board certified anesthesiologist since that doctor can monitor you closely while you are asleep.
Q: After my breast augmentation surgery, am I going to be able to sleep on my stomach? Will I be able to go back to my normal activities; running, hiking, working out with weights, water/snow skiing?
A: You will be able to return to all of your activities after breast augmentation surgery. You should have no limitations once you have healed. The healing process takes approximately two weeks. After that time, you can typically return to full activity without any limitations. This includes sleeping on your stomach, running, lifting weights, and skiing. Many of our patients play competitive sports and they are not limited in any way by their surgery.
Q: What is the down time?
A: Recovery from breast augmentation surgery is quite rapid. Most patients are able to return to work in 3 to 5 days. You should not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds for 2 weeks after your surgery. This includes small children, weights, and heavy equipment at work. After approximately 2 weeks, you should be able to return to full activity. Of course, every patient is different so your recovery time may be shorter or longer than 2 weeks.
