By the end of May, the city will see its number of bike racks more than double.
As its class project, the Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2011 chose to install more than 45 new bike racks throughout town. The new racks will be at the pier entrance, the El Porto parking lot, near the Farmer's Market on 13th Street, at the 12th Street parking structure and in the downtown business area by Jamba Juice, Starbucks, Koffee Kart and Pages bookstore.
The pier and El Porto locations will have 10 ocean wave-shaped racks, while the remaining locations will have a mix of hoop and hitch racks with a palm tree logo and "Manhattan Beach" or "MB" in the center.
"It is remarkable and a testament to this community how a group of 23 strangers came together in September, and after a few short months, identified and executed a project that results in additional public parking for over 90 bikes in our community," said project leader Bill Hory.
The Leadership class will celebrate the installation of the bike racks at a ribbon cutting this Saturday, May 14, at 3 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach pier. The class and supporters will start at the El Porto parking lot at 2:30 p.m. and ride bikes to the pier for the ribbon cutting.
The Leadership class raised $25,000 to complete the project through business and private sponsorships.
